Scott Balboni (State College, PA) has been chosen as the Head Coach for the 2013 United States University Men’s Select Team. Returning for the third time, Scott was an Assistant Coach at both the 2009 Winter World University Games in Harbin, China and the 2011 Winter World University Games in Erzurum, Turkey.
The United States University Men’s Select Team will compete at the Winter World University Games, to be held December 11-21, 2013 in Trentino, Italy. The United States University Men’s Select Team is comprised of players from collegiate ice hockey teams affiliated with the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA).
Scott spent the 2011-2012 season as the ACHA Men’s Division 1 National Team Head Coach. This newly created position allowed Scott to evaluate talent over the season in preparation for the 2013 World University Games in Trentino, Italy.
Scott recently resigned after finishing his fifth year as head coach at Penn State. Scott led Penn State to 3 regular season Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL) Regular Season Championships, as well as 3 ESCHL Playoff Championships. Scott has won back-to-back ESCHL Coach-of-the-Year Awards in 2007-2008 and 2009-2010 and was named the 2006-2007 ACHA Men’s Division 1 National Coach of the Year in his first season as head coach. Scott’s impressive 5-year record at Penn State now stands at 150-33-10, and his teams have won at least 30 games in 4 seasons. Balboni continued the academic and athletic excellence associated with Penn State with 42 ACHA Men’s Division 1 Academic All-Americans during his 5 seasons as head coach. Balboni was an Icers assistant from 1997-99 and 2002-06 and was an integral part of three ACHA Men’s Division 1 National Championship teams.
Scott is originally from Salem, NH, and played high school hockey at St. Johns Prep School in Danvers where he won a New England Catholic Conference Championship in 1992. He was then recruited and played as a full scholarship defenseman for NCAA Division I Providence College from 1992-96. A defensive defenseman, he tallied 13 goals and 41 assists in 138 career games with the Friars. His collegiate career culminated with the Friars beating Boston University and then Maine to capture the Hockey East Championship in 1996. He obtained a baccalaureate degree in Business Management from Providence in 1996.
Balboni resides in Centre Hall, PA with his wife Sandy and his children, AJ (14), Hailee (13) and Taylor (10).
