Rob was a goaltender who grew up playing at the A and AA level, in the New Jersey Youth Hockey Program. After high school, Rob attended Nichols College, in Dudley Massachusetts. During his freshman year, Rob opted to play at the Jr. A level for the Lowell Loch Monsters of the NEJHL. In his sophomore year at Nichols, Rob played for the varsity program in the ECAC Northeast (NCAA Div III). Rob then transferred to Montclair State University in 1999. There he led the Red Hawks (ACHA Div II) to back to back regular season titles and one undefeated league championship. Rob finished his 3 year career at MSU with a 54-11-8 record and still holds the win record for the program. MSU voted Rob the team MVP three seasons in a row, and he was voted to the second team All ACHA in 2001 and 2002. After college Rob pursued his career further by being invited and attending several ECHL and UHL tryouts.

Coach Martinez began coaching with the Jersey Wildcats at their inception and has been the Head Coach of the Empire Junior B team for 4 consecutive years. Coach Martinez is in his third year behind the bench for the Red Hawks.
