Adrian defeats Hope for DIII Title

Adrian only needed one goal to take down Hope for their third-straight National Championship

Adrian College captured their third-straight National Championship, defeating Hope College 1-0 on Saturday.

The low scoring affair came down to a duel between two of the tournament's most impressive goaltenders. Both Andrew Cook and Mitch Laflamme were suberb with Laflamme making 34 svaes in the shutout effort while Cook made 28 saves of his own.

Scoreless after 40 minutes, Grant Ehlert set up Mitchell Khal at 4:44 of the third period for the lone tally of the contest. It was Khal's fourth goal of the tournament, putting him in a tie with five other players for third overall in the tournament.

Khal led Adrian in scoring for the tournament, picking up a pair of game winning goals including the most important in a tight National Championship game.

This is the third loss for Hope in the finals as they fell in 2010 and 2011, the two years prior to Adrian's run of success.

For the Bulldogs, it's their third overall title at the DIII level coming in consecutive seasons against three different opponents. The one thing that all the teams have in common is their location, each is a Michigan-based school. Adrian dispatched Davenport in 2012 and followed it up with a win over Michigan-Flint in 2013.

Michigan has been a dominant state at the DIII level for some time as only two schools from outside the Great Lakes State have played for a National Championship since 2009 and only College of the Canyons (2011) came away victorious.

The schools from around Michigan will again have a lot to live up to in 2014-15 as Adrian will be looking for a four-peat while the rest will continue to chase the Bulldogs.
