Hope and Adrian face off for 2014 National Championship

Adrian seeks their third-straight title while Hope looks to play spoiler after knocking off the tournament's highest scoring team.

Saturday’s National Championship has been set at the DIII National Tournament as Adrian College (Gold) will face Hope College at 2:30 pm.

Adrian advanced to the title game with a 6-1 victory over Robert Morris-Chicago (White) while Hope College shutdown the tournament’s highest scoring team with a 2-0 win.

Entering Friday’s semifinal, Davenport had scored 22 goals en route to capturing their pool and setting up a showdown with Hope. Despite averaging just over seven goals per game entering Friday, Davenport’s high flying offense would be silenced.

Davenport carried the play offensively to an extent, outshooting Hope 28-19. Yet they couldn’t put any pucks past Andrew Cook as he was perfect between the pipes.

Offensively, Hope did all of their damage in the opening frame, scoring both of their goals in the game’s opening five minutes. Caleb Digison and Caleb Morgan scored just 1:19 apart in the first period, providing all the scoring that would be seen in the contest.

This will be the third appearance in the National Championship for Hope as they finished as the runner-up in 2010 and 2011. Their opponents are seeking their third-straight championship as Adrian knocked off Michigan-Flint in 2013 and Davenport in 2012.

The Bulldogs scored three times in the first period and extended their lead to four goals before Robert Morris put a goal on the board. The three-goal first period would serve to be all the scoring Adrian needed with three more insurance tallies coming in the final 40 minutes.

Four different scorers tallied for Adrian to open the scoring as Mitchell Khan’s unassisted goal would serve as the game winner. Scott Schueneman scored twice for the Bulldogs and Fred Krause picked up a pair of assists to lead Adrian’s attack.

The puck drops on Saturday’s Championship at 2:30 pm.
