Team USA Celebrates After Beating Slovakia in the Shootout Round  Team USA Celebrates Zimmel\'s Goal Against Slovakia

HARBIN, China - The U.S. University Select Team improved to 2-0 in the 2009 Winter World University Games thanks to a 5-4 shootout victory over Slovakia here tonight. Lukas DeLorenzo (Export, Pa./Penn State University) scored the game-winning goal for Team USA.

 

Slovakia opened the scoring with a five-on-three power-play goal at 5:07 of the first period, and gained a two-goal advantage at 9:02 of the frame. Jim Gehring (Chester Springs, Pa./West Chester University) got the U.S. on the board with a power-play goal at 11:38, but Slovakia scored with less than 30 seconds left in the period to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

 

The U.S. held a 14-6 shots-on-goal advantage in the second period and scored the only goal of stanza, a power-play tally off the stick of Gehring at 4:55.

 

Jaime Zimmel (Lincroft, N.J./Penn State University) tied the game for Team USA 3:55 into the third period, but Slovakia grabbed the lead once more at 10:00. Matthew Swezey (Cohoes, N.Y./United States Naval Academy) tied the game at 14:06 to force a five-minute sudden-death overtime session.

 

After a scoreless overtime, U.S. goaltender Paul Marshall (Orland Park, Ill./Ohio University) and DeLorenzo combined to lift Team USA to victory in the shootout.

 

The U.S. University Select Team returns to action at the 2009 Winter World University Games tomorrow (Feb. 23) when it faces Russia at 8:30 p.m. (7:30 a.m. ET).

 

NOTES: The U.S. has participated in four previous Winter World University Games and has never before won its first two games in the event ... The U.S. team is comprised of players from collegiate ice hockey teams affiliated with the American Collegiate Hockey Association. The University of Illinois leads all schools with five players on the 22-man roster ... Joe Augustine (North Scituate, R.I./University of Rhode Island) is the head coach of the 2009 U.S. University Select Team. Augustine is assisted by Scott Balboni (State College, Pa./Penn State University) and David Debol (Saline, Mich./University of Michigan-Dearborn).
